Oversight Board to review Meta’s handling of explicit AI images depicting females

The Oversight Board selected two cases from India and the US to assess Meta’s policies on explicit images of female public figures generated by AI. The Board will decide whether the content should be allowed as deepfake pornography is a growing cause of gender-based harassment online.

Oversight Board Co-Chair Helle Thorning-Schmidt stated, “Deepfake pornography is a growing cause of gender-based harassment online and is increasingly used to target, silence, and intimidate women — both on and offline.” The Board is aiming to understand if Meta is protecting all women globally and if its policies are effective.

The first case involves an AI-generated image of a nude woman resembling a public figure from India posted on Instagram. The second case features an AI-generated image of a nude woman with a man groping her breast posted on a Facebook group for AI creations. The Board is seeking public comments on these cases for consideration.
