Oxygen shortage kills 8 patients in besieged Gaza hospital: Minister

Eight patients have died in Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis city after a power outage and oxygen supply shortage caused by continuous Israeli strikes on the facility, said Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila. The conditions of some other serious patients became life-threatening due to the cessation of required treatment under the Israeli attack on the hospital. Israeli forces stormed the hospital and claimed to have apprehended “terrorists” and other suspects hiding in the hospital, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields.

The Israeli army has turned the Nasser Medical Complex into a “military barracks,” endangering the lives of patients and medical staff inside, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. 25 medical staff and 136 patients were still in the hospital without basic necessities and adequate medical capabilities for critical cases. Efforts by the World Health Organisation to evacuate the remaining patients to other hospitals were being obstructed by the Israeli army, and the entry of medical and humanitarian aid into the complex was also being hindered.

The IDF claimed that humanitarian aid and supplies, including a generator, fuel, and WHO-donated medicine, had been delivered to the Nasser Hospital to ensure its continued service while carrying out “precise activity against the Hamas” inside the facility.

The situation at Nasser Hospital in Gaza is dire, with patients dying due to a lack of power and oxygen supply caused by Israeli strikes, and medical staff and patients remaining in the hospital without adequate necessities and medical capabilities. The Israeli army’s actions are being condemned by the Gaza Health Ministry, which has called for international efforts to pressure the release of bedridden patients and medical staff taken away by Israeli military trucks. The ongoing conflict is putting the lives of innocent civilians at risk and obstructing the delivery of essential aid and supplies to the hospital, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
