Performance, intelligence not linked to any specific language: Goa Minister

Goa’s Social Welfare Minister Subhash Phal Dessai emphasized that language proficiency is not directly linked to performance and intelligence. Speaking at an educational program in Ponda, he highlighted the misconception that speaking good English equates to expertise, stating that intelligence is not language-specific. He urged parents to focus on nurturing their children’s talents and values, rather than solely on language skills.

Minister Phal Dessai shared his own experience of learning English later in his academic journey, emphasizing the importance of recognizing individual strengths and encouraging growth in those areas. He advised parents not to prioritize English fluency when selecting schools for their children, emphasizing the significance of holistic education beyond language proficiency.

Highlighting the value of diverse skills and knowledge, the minister underscored the need for a balanced approach to education. He urged parents to support their children’s interests and talents, rather than solely focusing on language acquisition. Minister Phal Dessai’s remarks serve as a reminder to prioritize overall development and individual growth in education.
