Philly Rapper Phat Geez Shot Dead Hours After Releasing His New Song ‘No Gunzone’

Phat Geez, a Local rapper and Meek Mill collaborator was shot and killed. The incident occurred on Sunday night in North Philadelphia.

Philadelphia police said that they received reports of an individual with a gun on Sunday at 10:10 p.m. Thus, officers reached the 1200 block of North Taney Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Phat Geez dead. Phat Geez’s real identity is known to be Derrick Gant. Police said that Phat Geez was shot multiple times.

Derrick Gant was transferred to the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Shortly after, he was pronounced dead.

Phat Geez was 28 years old at the time of his demise.

Phat Geez aka Derrick Gant was popular for his song, “Life” which was released in 2014 and features Meek Mill. In 2014, Gant’s affiliation with Mill’s label Dream Chasers Records, “dropped his first mixtape Cut From a Different Cloth in 2014.”

Mill took to X, formerly Twitter and wrote,

“Rip phat geez…..Philly is a terrible place for black people to live… you see too much death!!!!” Later he took to his Instagram story, posted a picture of Gant ‘posing in a thobe for Ramadan’ and wrote, “It’s time we fully break the streets up.”

Gant released a new song “No Gunzone” where he urged the youngsters to stay out of the streets by rapping, “Killings all up in my city, can’t get enough of it, facing all of these problems I cannot run from it.”

Hours before the shooting broke out, Gant took to Instagram and posted to promote his new song. However, the comment section of the post is currently filled with heartful tributes.

One user in the comment section wrote,

“First song I hear from him he speaking positively about putting the guns down… Just for him to die behind it. Sick sick sick.”

Philadelphia has witnessed the killing of Sixty-three people so far in 2024.

According to the data given by police, the current statistics are 30% down from this time in 2023.
