PM Modi launches India’s first indigenously-built hydrogen-powered ferry

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched India’s first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell ferry in Kochi, Kerala. The ceremony took place with the PM joining from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Cochin Shipyard spearheaded the Harit Nauka initiative to design and build the vessel for sustainable maritime transportation.

The vessel is a pilot project to showcase the use of green hydrogen as a maritime fuel, aligning with India’s goal of achieving ‘net zero’ emissions by 2070. The hydrogen fuel cell-powered ferry boasts zero emissions, zero noise, and energy efficiency. This move marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards a sustainable future.

The initiative is in line with the Centre’s vision for a green future, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy sources in reducing carbon footprint. The vessel demonstrates the capability and potential of indigenous technology in the maritime sector. The project aims to pave the way for more eco-friendly transportation options in the country.

The successful launch of India’s first indigenously-developed hydrogen fuel cell ferry sets a precedent for the adoption of eco-friendly technology in the maritime industry. The vessel symbolizes a step towards cleaner and sustainable transportation solutions, contributing to the global efforts to combat climate change.
