PM Modi’s Bhutan visit delayed by adverse weather conditions
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Bhutan on March 21-22 has been postponed due to ongoing inclement weather conditions, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday. The visit, which was extended by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay during his recent trip to India, has been rescheduled.
The MEA stated, “Due to ongoing inclement weather conditions over Paro Airport, it has been mutually decided to postpone the State visit of the Prime Minister to Bhutan on 21-22 March 2024.” The new dates for the visit are currently being discussed by both countries through diplomatic channels.
The planned visit aimed to continue the tradition of high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan, highlighting the importance of strong bilateral relations. The trip was also in line with India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, emphasizing the significance of maintaining close ties with neighboring countries.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bhutan was eagerly anticipated as it would have provided an opportunity to further strengthen ties and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation between the two nations. However, the rescheduling of the visit demonstrates the importance of prioritizing safety and practical considerations in such situations.
As both countries work towards finalizing the new dates for the state visit, the temporary delay showcases the flexibility and diplomacy required in managing such unforeseen circumstances. The commitment to fostering strong relations between India and Bhutan remains unwavering, with the rescheduled visit expected to take place at a more suitable time.
