Bhogi Pongal (January 14)
The first day of the festival is Bhogi Pongal. On this day, homes are cleaned, and old, unused items are burned and discarded. This act signifies the start of a new cycle in life. Lord Indra, the rain god, is honored on this day. Homes are smeared with fresh cow dung, and vibrant ‘kolams’ (rangolis) are created.
Surya Pongal (January 15)
The second day, known as Surya Pongal or ‘Thai Pongal’, is the most significant. On this day, the Sun God is worshipped. Pongal is prepared using fresh rice, milk, and jaggery, and it is offered to the Sun God. This puja is typically conducted in the morning in an open area. Beautiful kolams are drawn at the entrances of homes, and people don new clothes.
Mattu Pongal (January 16)
The third day is Mattu Pongal, dedicated to livestock. Cows and bulls are bathed, their horns are painted, and they are adorned with flowers. According to tradition, Lord Shiva sent Nandi to earth to assist humanity in agriculture. A traditional bull competition called ‘Jallikattu’ is also held on this day.
Kaanum Pongal (January 17) marks the fourth and final day of the Pongal festival. On this day, families come together to spend quality time, exchange gifts, and engage in cultural activities. Siblings pray for each other’s well-being while enjoying traditional dishes and festive celebrations.
