Pop Isaacs Lawsuit Explained: Texas Tech Basketball Player Accused of Sexually Assaulting a Minor Girl

Texas Tech basketball player Pop Isaacs is facing a civil lawsuit that charged him with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. The incident was reported when the Red Raiders were playing a tournament in the Bahamas in November 2023.

The lawsuit details how, after the incident, the plaintiff contacted Red Raiders coach Grant McCasland on December 14, 2023, who reported the incident to the athletic director Kirby Hocutt and other university officials. Pop Isaacs had reportedly played four games since the incident. The school, in a statement, said that it has taken the report very seriously, and an investigation has been initiated immediately.

The athletic department, in a statement, added that they reached out to the Title IX office twice. Based on the information gathered, there is no reason to withhold Pop Isaacs from university activities, which includes allowing him to participate in basketball competitions. The school also stated that the Title IX investigation will continue regardless of the course of the civil lawsuit.

The lawsuit was filed in Lubbock County by the parents of the girl who charged the player with assaulting her. The Texas Tech campus is located in Lubbock County. The girl is 17 years old, which is also the minimum age of sexual consent in the state of Texas. However, the lawsuit alleges that the girl was intoxicated and was not in a position to give consent for the sexual act.

The lawsuit detailed how a Texas Booster had brought alcoholic drinks for Issacs and a teammate. There were two other girls aged 16 and 17 in the room. The lawsuit alleged that Issacs took the 17-year-old Girl whose name has been withheld and sexually assaulted her. The lawsuit also added that the girl resisted and tried to fight him off. The incident happened during the team trip to the Bahamas in November 2023. The lawsuit has asked for $1 million in damages.

More details were obtained by the media which revealed that the girl who was given the pseudonym “Janie Doe,” along with a 16-year-old friend had traveled to watch the Battle 4 Atlantis college basketball tournament accompanied by her parents when the incident happened. As per court documents Doe along with her parents and friend got acquainted with the Texas Tech basketball team at an Atlantis resort during dinner.

Pop Isaacs and a team supporter named Booster were playing Blackjack at the same table. As per the victim’s father Booster brought several alcoholic drinks and everyone including Doe consumed them. Doe was intoxicated and went into a room along with Issacs where the alleged incident happened. Court documents stated the victim did not consent to the intercourse and “attempted to fight [Isaacs] off.”

The lawsuit sais that Doe did not talk about the incident for several weeks and in December 2023, Pop Isaacs was bragging about the happening when Doe decided to tell her parents. The incident severely traumatized Doe and she suffered immense mental suffering, according to the lawsuit filing obtained by ESPN.
