Poverty is a state in which a person is unable to afford basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing. Nowadays It can be found in every country, plus it is increasing day by day.

Though it has affected many countries, an organization like the United Nations, World Vision, and Global Citizen are working alongside towards this major problem.

According to the research held by the world back, the countries with the highest poverty rate in the world are as follows.

• South Sudan – 82.30%
• Equatorial Guinea – 76.80%
• Madagascar – 70.70%
• Guinea-Bissau – 69.30%
• Eritrea – 69.00%
• Sao Tome and Principe – 66.70%
• Burundi – 64.90%
• the Democratic Republic of the Congo – 63.90%
• Central African Republic – 62.00%
• Guatemala – 59.30%
• Pakistan 24.30%

What’s the root cause of poverty?

Poverty is not all about lacking basic necessities like water, food, shelter, education, or healthcare. But domestic violence, poor governance, ethnic discrimination, conflicts, exploitation, etc. are also included in causing poverty. And all these inequities lead society and people into the state of poverty and restrict better access to services that can help in the improvement and overcoming of poverty.

In most fragile countries, It has a higher effect on children and communities. It is mainly caused by the following factors.

• Political upheaval
• The past and present conflict
• Corrupted leaders
• Poor infrastructure, etc.

Efforts made by the World Vision to overcome poverty

In 2020, with the support of our generous donors, World Vision was able to do the following contribution:

• Equipped 3.4 million people with access to clean water
• Distributed 178,265 metric tons of food in 14 countries
• Impacted 1.3 million jobs through microloans
• Supported nearly 3.4 million kids through child sponsorship
• Helped 78.2 million people impacted by major disasters and humanitarian emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic
• Supported more than 128,000 children in 23 countries in building literacy, numeracy, and life skills
• Distributed 6.5 million long-lasting insecticidal bed nets

Besides, WV has 35, 000 staff working for them worldwide and all these can workers are distributed in nearly 100 countries.

The poverty line in Countries

Lines vary from country to country. In 2017, new median poverty lines were announced by the World Bank. Arranging the following countries into low, middle, high-income countries. 

• $1.90 per person per day — in 33 low-income countries
• $3.20 per person per day — in 32 lower-middle-income countries, such as India and the Philippines
• $5.50 per person per day — in 32 upper-middle-income countries, such as Brazil and South Africa
• $21.70 per person per day — in 29 high-income countries
