Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana 2024: Registration, Benefits, Eligibility Criteria and More

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana or PMGKAY was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to help poor people. Under the scheme, extra food grains are provided for the eligible people. Around 1118 LMT of food grains were distributed under the scheme over 28 months. The entire cost was around Rs. 3.91 lakh crore. 

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was introduced by Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, on March 26, 2020. This scheme was a part of the existing scheme, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. 

What Is the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Scheme?

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana is an initiative that promotes Atmanirbhar Bharat. The beneficiaries are mainly the poor and the migrants. 

Phase I of the scheme ran from April to June 2020. Its second phase was operationalized from July to November 2020. Notably, the third phase was from May to June 2021.

The fourth and fifth phases of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana covered the period of July to November 2021 and December 2021 to March 2022 respectively. Phase VI of the scheme ran from April to September 2022 with an estimated outlay of an extra Rs. 80,000 Crore. 

However, the government extended the tenure of the scheme for the next five years, starting January 1, 2024. The scheme was initially started to offer additional food grain support to those affected families and individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana Benefits

Under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, each family having a ration card is provided with 5 kg of free food grains. 

This scheme is an addition to the subsidized food grains that are available to vulnerable communities through the Public Distribution System. 

The states and UTs of Gujarat, Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab are allocated wheat. 

Apart from the above-mentioned states and UTs, the remaining states and Union Territories are provided with Rice. 

Eligibility Criteria of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana 

Families who are the beneficiaries under the Priority Households (PHH) and Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) categories qualify for the program. The PHH category is identified by the state government. The AAY families are identified by the states. However, the states are liable to follow Central Government guidelines.

The guidelines:

1. Families which are led by those aged 60 and above having no support, disabled individuals, terminally ill, or widows are eligible for the scheme. 

2. Individuals who are aged 60 and above, disabled individuals, terminally ill, widows, single men, and women having no family support are also eligible under the Yojana. 

3. Families of individuals who are HIV-positive and belong to the Below Poverty Line are included under the scheme. 

4. Daily wage earners, slum dwellers, rural artisans, small farmers, and landless laborers belonging to both urban and rural areas are eligible.

5. Primitive tribal households are also eligible.

Application Process of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana 

The process by which an eligible person becomes the beneficiary of this scheme has been explained below. 

1. If you meet the eligibility criteria, then you can get the benefits under the scheme. 

2. Interested individuals can avail the benefits by visiting the nearest Fair Price Shop.

3. Keep your Ration card handy. 

4. At the Fair Price Shop, the individual is either liable to provide an Aadhaar number or the Ration Card number. 

5. After undergoing the Aadhaar authentication with the help of iris or fingerprint-based identification at the Fair Price Shop, the individual becomes a beneficiary under the scheme and can get free food grains.
