Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is also known as Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. PMJAY is considered the biggest healthcare scheme in the globe. 

The government of India sponsors the PMJAY scheme.

It was rolled out by PM Narendra Modi to cover more than 12 crore underprivileged and poor families with no restriction on age and family size. 

The PMJAY scheme offers cashless hospitalization in the network of private and public hospitals.

This scheme covers the cost of medication, pre-hospitalization, hospitalization, and post-hospitalization at the time of treatment of both secondary and tertiary care procedures. 

The scheme also offers nearly 1,949 treatments, including knee replacement surgery and skull surgery. 

What is Covered Under PMJAY?

Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana covers the following list of medical expenses during the treatment. 

1. Food services

2. Complications arising during the medical treatment (if any)

3. Medical implantation services (if required)

4. Diagnostic and laboratory procedures

5. Non-intensive and ICU services

6. Hospital accommodation charges

7. Cost of medicine and medical consumables

8. Treatment, medical examination, and consultation fees

9. Pre-hospitalization expenses for up to 3 days

10. Post-hospitalization expenses for up to 15 days

Eligibility Criteria under PMJAY

People need to check for their names on the list provided in the “Socio-Economic and Caste Census-2011 data” to get the benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. If the name is present, then the family will be eligible to get the benefits under the scheme. 

Eligibility Criteria for Rural Households

Rural households can avail the benefits of the scheme based on the following six deprivation criteria, as per the official document of PMJAY. 

D1 – “Families living in one room with kucha walls and roof”

D2 – “Households with no adult members within the age group of 16–59 years”

D3 – “Families with no adult male members within the age group of 16–59 years”

D4 – “Households without an able-bodied adult member or with a disabled member”

D5 – “SC/ST households”

D6 – “Landless households earning a major part of their family income from manual casual labor”

Eligibility Criteria for Urban Households

The following list of urban households are eligible for the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. There are a total of 11 occupational categories. 

1. Street vendors or hawkers or cobblers or other service providers on the street

2. A waiter or a peon in a small establishment, or a delivery assistant, or a helper, or an attendant, or an assistant, or a shop worker. 

3. Helper drivers and conductors, or driver or cart puller or rickshaw puller or transport workers or conductor

4. Washer-man or Chowkidar

5. Repair worker or assembler or mechanic or electrician

6. Ragpicker

7. Beggar

8. Domestic worker

9. Mali, sweepers, sanitation workers

10. Handicraft workers, tailors, artisans, home-based workers

11. Mason, coolie, plumber, security guard, welder, painter, labor, construction worker

Documents Required to Apply Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana 

1. Document proof of the current status of the family to be covered (Joint or nuclear)

2. Income certificate 

3. Caste certificate

4. Contact details (mobile, address, email)

5. Age & identity proof (Aadhaar Card/PAN Card)

How to Check Eligibility and Apply for PMJAY Online?

Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana or Ayushman Bharat scheme applies to all beneficiaries who are a part of the RSBY scheme and are identified by the SECC 2011 data. 

1. Log in to, the official website to apply for, PMJAY.

2. Go to the homepage and enter your mobile number. Then enter the captcha code correctly. 

3. You will receive an OTP on the registered mobile number. Enter it and you will reach the PMJAY login screen. 

4. Select the state from where you belong. 

5. Check your eligibility criteria by entering a RSBY URN number, or Ration card number your name, and mobile number.

6. If you are eligible, then your name will be displayed on the right-hand side of the page. 

7. Click on the “Family Members” tab and check the beneficiary details.

8. If you wish to add members, then go to “Add Family Details.” Then enter the Ration Card no. of the beneficiary you wish to add, then click on “Check Document Details.”

Moreover, you can also check the eligibility by approaching any EHCP or Empanelled Health Care Provider. It can also be checked by dialing 1800-111-565, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana call center number.
