History and Significance
Pravasi Bhartiya Divas was first celebrated on 9 January 2003 by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee as on 9 January Mahatma Gandhi returned home from South Africa. In the 18th century, Gujarati merchant traders reached Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa. At the same time, Mahatma Gandhi arrived in the Natal province of South Africa in the year 1893 as a legal representative of a businessman Dada Abdullah Seth. Mahatma Gandhi fought against the apartheid policy in South Africa. At the same time, he also fought for the respect of the overseas Indian community. Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa on 9 January 1915. Taking inspiration from the struggle of Mahatma Gandhi for 22 years, this day is celebrated as Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.
