President Murmu introduces India’s inaugural indigenous gene therapy for cancer (Lead)

President Droupadi Murmu launched India’s first home-grown gene therapy for cancer, CAR-T Cell Therapy, at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay. The therapy is a major breakthrough in the fight against cancer and offers new hope for patients worldwide.
President Murmu highlighted the significance of the therapy, stating that it is accessible and affordable, unlike similar treatments in developed nations. She emphasized that CAR-T Cell Therapy will provide new lives to countless patients, marking a significant advancement in medical science.
The collaboration between IIT-B, Tata Memorial Hospital, and ImmunoACT in developing CAR-T Cell Therapy showcases the success of academic-industry partnerships. President Murmu praised this initiative as an example of the Make In India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, encouraging similar efforts in the future.
The President commended the focus on research and development at IIT-B over the last three decades, highlighting the institution’s role in driving technological advancements in India. She also emphasized the importance of leveraging the expertise of faculty and students from institutions like IIT-B for the country’s benefit.
The launch event was attended by Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais, IIT-B Director Subasis Chaudhuri, and other dignitaries, faculty, and students. The development of CAR-T Cell Therapy signifies a significant milestone in India’s healthcare sector, offering new hope and affordable treatment options for cancer patients across the country.
