Americans who had borne the brunt of the Progressive data breach can claim up to $5,000, which is a part of the $3.25 million settlement.
However, they would have to furnish proof of losses being the most direct route to payment.
The settlement was the logical conclusion of a class action lawsuit accusing Progressive of failing to secure customer data.
The data breach was precipitated by a security chink in one of Progressive’s third-party call centre vendors. The data breach affected individuals from May 2021 to May 2023.
In response to the class action lawsuit, Progressive agreed to pay $3.25 million over claims that it failed to protect client’s personal information.
The data breach led to the compromise of sensitive information such as Social Security numbers and financial account data of the customers.
Consumers whose sensitive information was compromised and accessed by unauthorized third parties are eligible for compensation under this settlement.
Consumers who were affected by the data breach can document their losses and claim compensation up to $5000 for damages such as fraudulent charges, identity theft, or credit-related expenses.
For persons who are unable to furnish documents, a cash payment will be available but it will depend on the number of claims filed and the remaining settlement fund.
All the affected consumers are eligible for three years of credit monitoring services. It includes $1 million in identity theft insurance and three-bureau credit monitoring.
Affected consumers must submit the valid claim form by February 18, 2025, and the final hearing for the Progressive data breach settlement is set for February 25, 2025.
Progressive is not the only entity which is settling class action lawsuits pertaining to a data breach. Nonstop Administration and Insurance Services is also settling a data breach lawsuit for a breach which happened in 2022 in similar circumstances.
In this data breach, sensitive information such as names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, health plan IDs, and prescription details were compromised.
Here also the affected individuals can claim up to $5000 as compensation for the losses due to the breach. The payments will be distributed after the final approval hearing for this settlement which is scheduled for March 18, 2025.
