Punjab refutes allegations of deteriorating law and order in state

The Punjab government has defended its handling of the ongoing farmers’ protest, stating that the law and order situation has not deteriorated in the state. Chief Secretary Anurag Verma refuted allegations and stated that the gathering of farmers at the Punjab-Haryana border has been largely peaceful, with no major incidents reported.

Verma mentioned that the farmers’ groups were restrained from crossing over to Haryana by the police of the neighboring state. He also highlighted the injuries sustained by about 160 people due to the use of riot control measures by the Haryana Police, including tear gas shells, rubber bullets, physical force, and drones.

The Chief Secretary emphasized that despite these incidents, the government of Punjab has been able to manage the crowd in an orderly fashion. He also mentioned ongoing parleys between state officials and farm leaders for the dispersal of crowds at the borders.

Verma urged the government of India to consider the demands of the farm unions more sympathetically to resolve the issue amicably. He also stressed the sensitive law and order issues in a border state like Punjab and the need to handle such protests with caution.

The Punjab government’s response comes in the midst of the ongoing farmers’ agitation, with the state government defending its actions and urging for a more understanding approach towards the demands of the protesters. The issue remains a point of contention between the farmers and the government, with both sides seeking a resolution to the ongoing protests.

The government of Punjab has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state while addressing the concerns of the protesting farmers. The situation at the Punjab-Haryana border continues to be monitored closely as efforts to resolve the protests are ongoing.

The Chief Secretary’s letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs reflects the state government’s perspective on the handling of the farmers’ agitation and its efforts to ensure a peaceful resolution to the ongoing protests. The Punjab government remains engaged in dialogue with farm leaders and hopes for a positive outcome in the near future, as the protests continue to draw attention and support from various quarters.
