Pursuing Center to include Khasi, Garo languages in Constitution since 2019: Meghalaya CM

Meghalaya Chief Minister Pushes for Inclusion of Khasi and Garo Languages in Indian Constitution

Shillong, Feb 19 (IANS) – Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has been actively pursuing the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution since 2019. He revealed that he has written eight letters to the Central government between 2019 and 2023, emphasizing the importance of the inclusion.

During a session in the state assembly, Sangma addressed the MLAs’ queries, stating that the Centre has not provided any clarification for the delay in the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages. He assured the house that the state government is continuously pursuing the matter with the Centre.

The Chief Minister highlighted the MDA government’s resolution in December 2018, showing a strong commitment to the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Constitution. He emphasized that both languages are on the list of 38 languages pending with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In Meghalaya, where Khasi and Garo are the principal languages, with English being the official language, the push for inclusion of these indigenous languages holds significant cultural and historical importance.

Sangma’s efforts to advocate for the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution reflect the state’s commitment to preserving and promoting its linguistic diversity. The push for the inclusion of these languages is a significant step towards recognizing and honoring Meghalaya’s rich linguistic heritage.
