Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti– Rabindra Jayanti is a cultural festival in remembrance of Rabindranath Tagore. It is the birth anniversary of the famous poet, one of the prominent people from the Bengali community. It is celebrated on 9th May. As per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the 25th day of Baisakh i.e. near the 7th of May on the Gregorian calendar.
History and Significance
The famous poet Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7th May 1861. Merely at the age of 8, he started writing poetries and by the time he turned 16, he published his first book under his own name. He was a renowned visual artist, poet, playwright, novelist and composer. He was regarded as the biggest literary poet of India and also the first Asian laureate to win the prestigious Nobel Prize for his contribution to Indian music and literature in 1913. Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated to recognise his contributions and teach future generations about his work.
The day is celebrated by organising various kinds of cultural events across the country mostly by the Bengali community. It includes poetry, plays and dance dramas as well as religious songs written and composed by Tagore. Many schools, colleges and government institutions also celebrate the day with full enthusiasm. In Kolkata, the day is also called as Poncheeshe Boishakh with a massive cultural event organised at Jorasanko Thakurbari (Tagore’s ancestral home) as well as Rabindra Sadan (cultural centre). Shantiniketan located in Birbhum, West Bengal also celebrates the Jayanti by organising a grand celebration on this day. His work was selected by two counties as their national anthem, the first is India’s “Jana Gana Mana” and the other Bangladesh’s “Amar Shonar Bangla”.
