Radha Ashtami is an auspicious festival celebrated in the Hindu community. It is usually observed with the same excitement as Lord Krishna’s birth anniversary. As the name suggests, it is celebrated as the birth anniversary of ‘Shri Radha Rani’, the consort of Lord Krishna. In Hindu mythology, she is regarded as the ‘avatar’ of Goddess Lakshmi. It is observed 15 days after ‘Janmashtami’, the birth anniversary of Sri Krishna. Basically, it occurred on ‘Ashtami’ (8th day) of the Shukla Paksha (the bright fortnight of the moon) in the month of ‘Bhadrapada’ as per the Hindu calendar. The festival is also famous with other names including ‘Radha Jayanti’ or ‘Radhashtami’.
The festival is celebrated with full enthusiasm and devotion all across the country especially in Barasana, Mathura and Vrindavan.
