Story

The story of the day of Ratha Saptami is related to Samba, the son of Lord Krishna. According to the legend, once Samba became very proud of his physical strength. Samba used to insult anyone at any time. One day when Durvasa Rishi came to meet Lord Krishna, he looked very weak. As soon as Samba saw him, he started making fun of him, and because of this Rishi Durvasa became very angry at the arrogance of Samba and he cursed him to be leprosy. When Samba, troubled by this, he asked his father Shri Krishna to atone for this sin, he asked him to worship the sun. It is said that Samba worshiped the sun by obeying his father, after which he became disease-free on the day of Ratha Saptami. Since then there is a belief among the people that worshiping the Sun God on Ratha Saptami gives freedom from disease.

Significance, and Importance

The day of Ratha Saptami is considered to be the most suitable to donate or participate in charitable works in the name of Lord Surya. It is believed that on this day one can get freedom from all sins and sorrows. It is said that a man commits seven types of sins in his life. These are sins committed intentionally, unintentionally, by word of mouth, by bodily action, in the mind, and in previous birth, and in previous lives. Worshiping the Sun God on Ratha Saptami gives freedom from all these sins. It is a religious belief that all the gods and goddesses are pleased on the day of Jayanti, they do not disappoint their devotees.

Puja Vidhi

On the day of Ratha Saptami, wake up early in the morning and first of all, face the east and salute the Sun God. After this, after retiring from bathing, take water in hand and do Amchan. After this, wear red colored clothes and offer Arghya to Sun God by mixing red colour, sesame, durva, sandalwood and Akshat in water. After this, light a lamp of pure desi ghee and chant the mantra Om Ghrini Suryay Namah, Om Suryay Namah.
