A week before, a rare deep-sea fish named oarfish, which was 12 feet wide, was found near San Diego by some kayakers and snorkelers.
The oarfish are the longest bony fish in the world, reaching over 30 feet.
Rare Dead Oarfish Found in California
This fish, however, was found floating on the surface, which means that the fish was dead, hence the body started floating.
It’s a very rare thing to see because only 20 oarfish have been seen in California since the year 1901.
The group of people who found the fish worked with the lifeguards to move the fish to the research facility.
Scientists are now planning to study the fish to understand more about its life and death.
After that, the fish will be added to the special collection at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for further research about the species.
Oarfish are long; they have ribbon-like bodies.
Oarfish are known to eat small fish like krill and plankton.
These fish are famous because of their strange appearance; they have large eyes and long and thin bodies.
The fish is very rare to see and looks very unusual.
The look of the fish has led to many stories and legends like the doomsday fish.
In some places, people believe that seeing an oarfish is a sign of an earthquake, but there’s no proof to back that up though.
Even though oarfish have a scary, mysterious appearance and also do have stories attached to it, it is a very rare fish.
A user commented,
“So glad that this rare finding will allow you an opportunity to perform a necropsy! Hoping it provides lots of valuable info for you!”
When an oarfish comes to shore, it generally means the fish is sick, or confused and changes its path of travel.
Japan and Taiwan can see oarfish in a more regular way than any part of the world does.
