Reasons for a Slow Internet Connection

Who hates slow internet connections? Um, EVERY single person on this planet without any doubt. But have you ever tried to figure out the causes behind a sloppy network? Well, that does sound like a daunting task, which is why we have got your back. In this post, we will discuss some of the main factors that contribute to a slow connection.

But before we get to the causes and try to fix them, make sure that the problem does not originate in your ISP. You can sometimes get in trouble by choosing an unreliable internet service in order to save a few bucks. If your internet service provider is not a reputable company know that no expert or guide in the world will solve your internet issue.

And, now a great internet service provider does not necessarily mean you go with an expensive one. There are many providers that are amazing yet affordable, Xfinity, to name one. The best part about this network is that the Xfinity Customer Service is prompt to cater to your internet issues.

On that note, let us see how the internet speed is compromised in case of multiple users.

High Latency

To understand this cause, you first need to understand what latency means. When data travels from your device to the destination and back, it is called latency. When your physical actions are delayed by a high latency, you will notice noticeable lag on your screen. You might have experienced this mostly when you are playing an online game or video calling someone.

There is a lot of difficulty in working around high latency. So, what exactly causes high latency? There are many factors that will influence this, including your physical distance from internet servers, the congestion on the network between you and the servers, as well as the infrastructure of your internet provider. The type of Internet also affects latency.

Throttling of the ISP

Ever came across this word? Great that you already know what it means. You may experience a slow connection if your internet provider throttles your speed. When you exceed your data cap or if the network is too congested, a provider might throttle your speed. There are other such circumstances when Your ISP might slow down the internet.

Additionally, your provider may slow down your internet access if it deems your activity illegal or prohibits a particular activity (such as torrenting). So, make sure to go with a provider that comes with zero data caps. Just to be on the safe side.

Multiple Devices Connected to the Internet

We all experience this every now and then. It is theoretically impossible to slow down the internet speed when multiple devices are connected to Wi-Fi. But what exactly happens when multiple devices are connected to the internet? Okay, so when more devices that are connected to the internet, the bandwidth shared increases and this results in sloppy and slow connections.

The bandwidth for someone who is closer to the access point will obviously be higher than that of someone who is further away.

Moreover, internet speed depends on how the Internet is used. In other words, even if several users are viewing web pages or sending emails simultaneously, they only consume a small portion of bandwidth. Conversely, downloading large files and streaming live videos consumes a significant amount of bandwidth. You will experience a substantial impact on bandwidth if many users stream HD videos or download large files regularly. Similarly, users who send large files with significant bandwidth consumption will have difficulty downloading files from the network.

The Devices Are Outdated

What if there are no issues with the internet and it is just your outdated, slow computer? Yes, that can certainly be one of the reasons. In that case, you may need to upgrade your computer, tablet, phone, or gaming console if they are outdated and are not able to handle the speed of Wi-Fi today.

Try power cycling your desktop or laptop if you are experiencing speed issues. It will clear any junk from your memory, refresh your connection, and get rid of temporary files and unnecessary processes. Overworked processors tend to be the cause of speed issues, which can be corrected by power cycling the computer for 30 seconds. This will clear its head in a flash of light.

Although there are many other reasons behind a slow internet but for now, these are enough. We will discuss more causes in another post maybe. Did you find the reason behind your slow internet yet? Let us know in the comments section below.
