Red Planet Day 2024 Quotes, Images, Messages, Slogans, Cliparts and Instagram Captions
Red Planet Day is observed on November 28 every year. This day is commemorated in commemoration of the Mariner 4 spacecraft, launched by the NASA on November 28, 1964 that flew around Mars and was able to send its first clear images back to Earth. Mars is termed the Red Planet because the surface is covered with iron oxide (rust) giving it a reddish hue. This day commemorates the human sense of wonder, as well as the accomplishments humanity has made towards Mars and its extraordinary space pursuits.
Red Planet Day began on November 28, 1964 when NASA sent the Mariner 4 spacecraft to Mars. Mariner 4 was the first spacecraft to fly near the surface of Mars and send its first clear images to Earth. In July 1965, these images provided humanity with detailed information on the surface of Mars for the first time. This mission not only brought some information about Mars, but it also marked the start of a new chapter in space adventures.
There already existed a lot of religious and cultural beliefs about Mars. The ancient Babylonians referred to Mars as “Nergal” (God of War), in their belief that the color reminded them of blood. This was how it became affiliated with the God of War of the ancient Greeks and Romans, “Ares” and “Mars”. These old beliefs led to the inquisitiveness of Mankind about Mars, which persists today.
Human curiosity about Mars is very old. Scientists always sought the possibility of life on Mars. Pictures of Mars were mostly showing there might be water, ice polar caps, and signs of life as well. This brought a glimmer of hope and even more details could be gained about the existence of life on Mars. With the currently recent studies, there are so many similarities between the surface of Mars and the topography of the Earth. This could raise the possibility that human beings will be able to colonize Mars sooner or later.
Red Planet Day is an occasion when we learn new information about Mars and share our curiosity about its discovery. This day is also an occasion to celebrate the advances made in science, technology, and space exploration.
On Red Planet Day, people do various activities related to Mars. In this day people read books based on Mars, such as Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles, Roger Zelazny’s Rose for Ecclesiastes, and many other novels. Movies based on Mars are also watched on this day, prominent films include The Martian, Mission Mangal, Interstellar, and A Trip to Mars.
Apart from this, information related to Mars is imparted to children at school to help them understand more about this planet and develop interest in its exploration. This day inspires children and the younger generation and increases their participation in space exploration.
For 2024 Red Planet Day, there has not been any official theme yet, but the day exhibits an enthusiasm for Mars in the human race and everything happening in space exploration. The aim of this day is to learn about Mars further and motivate efforts for its exploration.
Mars appears red due to the presence of iron oxide (rust) on its surface. It can be recognized from Earth as a reddish planet. The world knows its huge volcano Olympus Mons, and the huge canyon Valles Marineris. Knowledge about such places has always been a prime attraction for scientists and astronauts.
