Reddit Files for IPO, Marking the First Social Media Public Offering in Years

The message board site, which came into existence in 2005, detailed its financial performance in a prospectus. It is the last of an early generation of social media companies to go public.
Reddit, which is essentially a community-focused message board, is finally going public and thus will become the first major social media company to venture into the stock market. It will also become a test for private companies after a drought in initial public offerings.
In the run-up to selling its shares to investors, Reddit disclosed its financial performance. Reddit is a San Francisco-based company that was founded in 2005, and its financial report card revealed that its revenue surged by 20% and it considerably reduced its losses in 2023. It added that it had 73 million daily users and more than 100,000 active communities.
Reddit Breaks Social Media IPO Dry Spell
The prospectus released by the company is a precursor to its plunge into the stock market, and the 18-year-old company will go public on the New York Stock Exchange in a matter of weeks under the stock symbol RDDT.
Its bankers are seeking a valuation of $5 billion in its IPO, according to two people familiar with the matter. This constitutes 50% of the $10 billion valuation the company fetched in a 2021 private financing round.
Steve Huffman, Reddit’s chief executive, said in a founder’s letter included in the prospectus,
“We are going public to advance our mission and become a stronger company. We hope going public will provide meaningful benefits to our community as well. Our users have a deep sense of ownership over the communities they create on Reddit.”
Reddit is one of the past-generation social media companies that will aim for the stock market.
In the past, many social media houses have made their forays, and this included Facebook’s high-profile offering in 2012, Twitter’s in 2013, and Snap’s in 2017.
Social media platforms are under intense scrutiny and have been indicted for misinformation, hate speech, and other effects. The social media scene has also seen a big transformation with Facebook, which was renamed Meta, and Twitter was acquired by Elon Musk, who took the company private in 2022 and renamed it X.
In the past year, there has been a lull in public offerings, with only 108 companies having gone public. Among the largest offerings among tech companies were Arm, a chip designer, and Instacart, a grocery delivery company.
