Repeat Kalanidhi Veeraswamy from Chennai North LS constituency as DMK candidate
In the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the DMK has announced its decision to field sitting MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy from the Chennai North constituency. Veeraswamy, a 54-year-old plastic surgeon and son of senior party leader Arcot Veerasamy, secured a massive victory in the 2019 polls.
Having defeated the DMDK’s R. Mohan Raj by a substantial margin of 4,61,518 votes in the previous election, Veeraswamy’s re-nomination comes as no surprise. The Chennai North constituency has historically been a stronghold for the DMK, with candidates from the party consistently emerging victorious.
Notably, the seat was briefly held by AIADMK’s TG Venkatesh Babu in 2014, when he defeated the DMK’s R. Girirajan by a margin of 99,704 votes. However, the DMK quickly regained control of the constituency in subsequent elections, further solidifying its position as the dominant political force in the region.
With Veeraswamy’s reappointment as the party’s candidate for the Chennai North constituency, the DMK aims to maintain its stronghold and secure another victory in the upcoming polls. The decision reflects the party’s confidence in Veeraswamy’s abilities and his track record of success in representing the constituents effectively.
