Report: Majority of Indian adults underestimate risk of shingles
A recent global report by GlaxoSmithKline reveals that over 80% of Indian adults above 50 lack awareness of shingles and its risks. The survey involved 3,500 adults from 12 countries, highlighting a lack of understanding about the disease among the vulnerable age group.
In India, 81% of English-speaking and 86% of Hindi-speaking individuals underestimate the risk of developing shingles. Many participants were also unaware of the symptoms associated with the condition, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and education.
Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, leading to painful blisters and discomfort. As people age, their immune response weakens, increasing their susceptibility to the disease. This ongoing Shingles Awareness Week aims to educate the public on prevention and treatment options available.
Dr Rashmi Hegde, Executive Vice President – Medical Affairs at GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, India, urges individuals to speak to their healthcare providers about shingles and take necessary precautions. With the potential to disrupt daily life and cause significant discomfort, awareness and early intervention are crucial in managing the condition effectively.
