Reviving KGMU’s Kidney Transplant Programme

Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has resumed its kidney transplant programme after facing hurdles and suspensions. The programme, which started in 2014, was revived in December 2022, and five transplants were carried out by April 2023. However, issues with operating theatre allotment have once again caused delays.

KGMU Vice Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand stated, “Arrangements are being made to make the operating theatre available to the transplant unit on a regular basis.” She further added, “Two operating schedules have been set aside for kidney transplants. This will help take the kidney transplant programme ahead smoothly.”

The challenges faced by KGMU’s kidney transplant programme were exacerbated when some faculty members left the institute, causing disruptions. Despite resuming operations and successfully conducting five transplants, the programme faced setbacks due to improper allotment of the transplant operating theatre.

The efforts to streamline the kidney transplant programme at KGMU are underway, with a focus on ensuring regular access to the operating theatre for the transplant unit. With dedicated operating schedules set aside for kidney transplants, the university aims to overcome existing obstacles and progress smoothly with its transplant programme.
