Russia's Rosneft continues to study & conserve Arctic ecosystems

Russian Oil Company Rosneft’s Scientific Research Programme in Arctic Region
New Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS) – The Russian oil company Rosneft has been conducting extensive scientific research in the Arctic region for over a decade. The company has been focusing on studying key species and preserving the biodiversity of the Arctic’s ecosystems. These efforts include studies of the polar bear, Atlantic walrus, ivory gull, and wild reindeer, as well as geological, oceanological, hydrometeorological, and environmental research.

Rosneft’s plan for the coming years includes the study of polar bear and wild reindeer populations, mapping environmentally sensitive areas, and assessing the state of habitats of valuable fish species. This multi-year research program aims to update data on local bioindicator species to aid in future conservation activities. According to Alexander Pashali, Director of the Department of Scientific and Technical Development and Innovations at Rosneft, the new program offers new research methods and objectives promising unique results.

The company’s research will include the first-ever aerial count of the polar bear’s Kara Sea subpopulation, as well as monitoring the wild reindeer population in the Western part of the Taymyr Peninsula. These efforts are essential in understanding and addressing the impact of global warming and climate change on the Arctic’s ecosystems.

Rosneft’s new program is part of the Business and Biodiversity initiative of the Ecology national project of the Russian Federation, aiming to preserve unique endangered animals. The company emphasizes its commitment to environmental issues and nature conservation, with the results of their environmental studies informing production activities and environmental monitoring.

The outcomes of the research under the new program are expected to contribute to the conservation of rare species, improve monitoring techniques, and fill in the gaps in scientific knowledge of the Arctic region’s ecology. The implementation of this program reflects Rosneft’s dedication to environmental preservation and scientific advancement.

The collaborative efforts between Rosneft, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, and leading scientific institutions demonstrate a commitment to studying and safeguarding the Arctic’s unique ecosystem.

The comprehensive scientific research conducted by Rosneft over the past decade and the advancement of the program for the coming years signifies a concerted effort to understand, protect, and preserve the delicate balance of the Arctic’s natural environment.
