Samsung Chairman Lee mourns the passing of Hyosung honorary chairman

Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong visited the funeral altar of Hyosung Group Chairman Emeritus, Cho Suck-rai, in Seoul to express condolences. Lee’s presence highlighted the longstanding connection between Samsung and Hyosung, rooted in the close partnership between their founders. Cho passed away at the age of 89.

The visit by Lee, accompanied by his mother, Hong Ra-hee, marked the first by a Korean business leader outside the deceased chairman’s relatives. Cho’s father, the late Hyosung founder Cho Hong-jai, had co-founded Samsung Corp. in 1948 with Samsung’s late founder Lee Byung-chul. Lee’s visit is a gesture of respect for the close ties between the two groups.

The late Cho Suck-rai had stepped down from the management of Hyosung Group in 2017 due to his advanced age and health. Lee Jae-yong’s visit to pay respects at the funeral altar underlines the significance of the historical business relationship between Samsung and Hyosung. The two companies share a rich history dating back to their founders’ collaboration in the early years.
