Every year 26 November is celebrated as Samvidhan Divas. This day holds a significant position in the Indian timeline because India adopted its constitution on 26 November 1949. On this day, the adoption of the constitution is not only celebrated, but tributes are also paid to the great personalities involved in its preparation. The purpose of Samvidhan Divas is that citizens must be made aware of the importance of the Constitution, its values, and their rights.
The history of 26 November is linked not merely to the year 1949. Its seed was sown during the Lahore session of the Congress in the year 1930, wherein the pledge of Purna Swaraj was passed. Subsequently, the practice of Law Day celebration began as a tribute to the pledge. It was officially titled as Constitution Day in 2015, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared the celebrations of this day as Constitution Day on the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.
It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to prepare the Constitution of India. The Constituent Assembly held a total of 166 meetings, consisting of 299 members. These included 229 Indian representatives and 70 representatives from British India. This assembly presented its views, suggestions and amendments in drafting the Constitution that laid the foundation for the future of India.
The Constitution initially had 395 articles, 22 parts and 8 schedules. After amendments from time to time, today it has a total of 448 articles. The Constitution was drafted in English and later translated into Hindi. This work was done on a priority basis before it was implemented.
The Constitution Drafting Committee consisted of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and it was him who drafted the Indian Constitution. He is regarded as the “chief architect” of the Indian Constitution because he ensured that fundamental rights like equality, liberty and justice got the highest place in the Constitution.
