Scott Hollingshed, a Terminally Ill 58-year-old from NSW’s Central Coast, Ends His Life by Lethal Injection Under NSW Laws
Scott Hollingshed, a terminally ill 58-year-old from NSW’s Central Coast, ended his own life by lethal injection under the new euthanasia laws in NSW, which is the last Australian state to legalize voluntary assisted dying.
Mr Hollingshed’s close friend Kellie Lott has confirmed that he died on Friday afternoon shortly after 2 pm ‘peacefully and with his partner Kat holding his hand.’
Scott Hollingshed was diagnosed with cancer in June, but his cancer soon metastasized to stage four, dashing any hopes of being cured.
Doctors ruled that he could not survive chemotherapy and had a slim chance of recovery with other modes of treatment.
What exactly happened to Scott Hollingshed?
Scott had just bought a yacht and was enjoying his life with his friends when one day he had severe pain in his chest.
Scott, who had suffered a heart attack in the past, knew it was something else.
Soon he started coughing up blood, and he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.
Scott was given six months to one year of remaining life, but his condition worsened even faster.
Painkillers like morphine were becoming ineffective.
Even daily tasks like eating or wearing socks were becoming an effort.
However, his partner stoically took everything in her stride, and it was her ordeal that finally led Scott to go for NSW’s voluntary assisted dying program.
Before starting the euthanasia program, Scott Hollingshed on Friday gave a heartbreaking goodbye to those who supported him in a livestream video.
Before bidding an emotional goodbye, he said,
“Just love each other and be there for each other. If you walk by someone in the street, ask them if they’re okay. It might save their life just to know there are good people left in the world… Just stick it out, people, for as long as you can, just stick it out.”
Scott Hollingshed’s friends paid tribute to him,
‘Goodbye, my first friend… will miss you, see you later mate.’
Close friend Kat O’Brien said,
‘But I feel very deeply that he is doing the right thing for himself, and I say that because I’ve seen him go from being pretty robust… and it just really went downhill very, very fast and he’s lost that autonomy as a man.’
Kat said she told Scott that it would be OK and just talk to whoever he wanted to talk to, have a cup of coffee, and try to be at ease.
Kat also revealed that Scott was scared and wanted to talk through the process.
Scott’s father was also bedridden during his last days and was looked after by him. The incident had a deep impact on him, and this was also one of the reasons he opted for euthanasia.
