Hari Raya Haji or selamat hari raya haji is another name for the Festival of Sacrifice and usually falls after 70 days of the holy month of Ramadan. It is also known as Eid al-Adha when Ibrahim willingly became ready to sacrifice his son Ismael to the will of God.
Ibrahim was asked to sacrifice his most precious possessions. After sacrificing his camels and all animal wealth he realized that these sacrifices are very miniscule he decided to sacrifice his most precious possessions , that is his son Ismael who Ibrahim had obtained very late in his life. Inrahim finally agreed to sacrifice his son. Knowing his emotions God who was testing Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice everything to his will put forth a lamb to be sacrificed and to this date Muslims around the world have been sacrificing animals to fulfill God’s will.
Eid al-Adha is the second holiest festival after Id and also marks the end of the pilgrimage to Mecca and demonstrates each practicing Muslim’s submission to Allah. Hari Raya Haji or selamat hari raya haji is celebrated in Malaysia with great fervor and happiness.
Mosques are tastefully lit up and sermons are read by the learned maulvis who interpret the holy Quran in even better enlightening ways to motivate the faithful to help the needy and deserving. Sacrifices of cows, goats and sheep are done by the financially well off believers and the remains are distributed between the poor and the needy. The practice helps the poor and the need to feel that God is always there and will send someone to take care of their miseries.
The faithful also make a visit to their parents and pay obeisance to them and have a happy celebration and big meal. The streets and towns of Malaysia are greatly bedecked and there is a cheerful and festive atmosphere everywhere.
Hari Raya Haji or selamat hari raya haji is alternatively also named as Greater Eid, Kurban Bayram, Eid al-Bakr and Bakrid. The sacrifices are conducted from sunset on the 12th day of Dhul Hijjah and until sunset on the 13th day of Dhul Hijjah.
The festivities are more symbolic of the importance of giving oneself up to the will of Allah and nothing is more precious than following the diktats or the ultimate and only God. It is also a moment to pause and think about the less fortunate and poor. There is no bigger sacrifice than helping the less fortunate.
