Born on 4th August 1981, Shama Sikander was born in the marble-rich town of Makrana, Rajasthan, in a middle-class family.

Her father, Sikandar Ali Gesawat, was a marble supplier, while her mother, Gulshan, was a homemaker. Shama, along with her three siblings, Salma, Rizwan, and Khalid, grew up with financial struggles.

When she turned 9, the family shifted to Mumbai in search of a better life, but the city of dreams proved anything but kind.

Often, there would be a shortage of food, and on several nights, they slept on empty stomachs.

Shama struggled through all that and grew up loving the arts.

Shama’s childhood was just as nomadic as it was challenging, with constant relocations, she attended nine different schools across Greater Mumbai.

By the time she completed her 10th grade and passed the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education test, she knew what exactly lay ahead in store for her to do.

In 1995, Shama joined the Roshan Taneja School of Acting from where she honed her skills and graduated a year later.

A Voyage through Television and Films

Shama’s career in entertainment started in the late 1990s with small roles in Bollywood films.

She made her Bollywood debut with the movie “Prem Aggan” in 1998, followed by a cameo in the Aamir Khan-starrer “Mann” in 1999.

While her early roles did not launch her into stardom, it was not until 2003 that Shama earned her first major lead role, that of Pooja Mehta in the popular Sony TV serial “Yeh Meri Life Hai”.

She played a young ambitious girl who fought the ups and downs in life with great determination and therefore clicked with every audience across India.

This lead role fetched her several awards, such as the Indian Television Academy Award for “Best Debut” and “GR8! Face of the Year” in 2004.

Over the next years, Shama did various genres and platforms.

Her films include “Dhoom Dadakka” released in 2008, and she played the negative role of Byankar Pari in the kids’ series “Baal Veer” between the years 2012 and 2014.

Her bold role in the short film “Sexaholic” in 2016 and the web series “Maaya: Slave of Her Desires” in 2017 showed her range and that she was up for experimenting with roles.

Both films were adult theme-based and received great appreciation for being bold and different.

Shama made a comeback to theatre, full-fledged, with the Bollywood thriller “Bypass Road” in 2019, marking her place in the industry.

Fashion Entrepreneur and Personal Life

Besides acting, Shama has a flair for fashion. In 2010, she launched her own women’s fashion label “Saisha” in the plush locality of Bandra, Mumbai.

The brand has showcased its collections at various prestigious events such as Hyderabad Fashion Week and Lakme Fashion Week, and also internationally in South Africa.

Shama herself often models her designs and adds another feather to her multi-talented cap.

Shama has always been open about her personal life, including the many struggles she’s faced, such as depression and bipolar disorder; using her platform, she hopes to raise much-needed awareness around mental health.

In March 2022, she married longtime boyfriend James Milliron in a picture-perfect wedding.
