Sharfuddoula Makes History as First Bangladeshi Umpire in ICC Elite Panel

Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid from Bangladesh has made history by becoming the first umpire from his country to be included in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires. The ICC announced this achievement following its annual review and selection process on Thursday.

Having been on the International Panel since 2006, Sharfuddoula’s first international appointment as an umpire came in an ODI between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in January 2010. He has officiated in various men’s Test matches, ODIs, and T20Is, as well as women’s ODI matches and T20I games.

Sharfuddoula expressed his excitement about joining the Elite panel after the retirement of Marais Erasmus, stating, “It is a great honour to be named on the ICC Elite Panel.” He thanked the ICC, the BCB, and his family and friends for their support, and is looking forward to more challenging assignments.

Sharfuddoula’s elevation to the Elite Panel of Umpires was decided by a selection panel that includes Wasim Khan, Sanjay Manjrekar, Tony Hill, and Mike Riley. Meanwhile, Chris Broad was not included in the Elite Panel of Match Referees for the upcoming season, reducing the panel from seven members to six.

Geoff Allardice, ICC Chief Executive, congratulated Sharfuddoula on his achievement, stating, “This is a well-deserved reward for many years of consistent performances in international matches and ICC tournaments.” The ICC Elite Panel of Umpires and the Elite Panel of Match Referees for the upcoming season were also announced.
