Shehbaz Sharif chosen as Pakistan’s new Prime Minister
Shehbaz Sharif, the President of PML(N), has been elected as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan. The announcement was made by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, with Sharif receiving 201 votes while PTI candidate Omar Ayub Khan secured 92 votes. Sharif, 72, will be serving his second term as Prime Minister.
Shehbaz Sharif previously held the position of Prime Minister from April 11, 2022 to August 14, 2023 after the Imran Khan government lost a no-confidence motion. He is the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who led the PML-N’s election campaign. The general elections in Pakistan were held on February 8 amidst allegations of rigging and violence.
Despite candidates supported by Imran Khan’s PTI winning the majority of seats, a coalition government was formed with the PPP and PML(N) joining forces. This paved the way for Shehbaz Sharif to become Prime Minister, following Nawaz Sharif’s decision to step aside. The election and subsequent political maneuvers have caused a significant shift in Pakistan’s leadership.
Shehbaz Sharif’s election to the position of Prime Minister marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s political landscape. His experience and leadership will be crucial as the country navigates through various challenges and works towards progress and development.
