Significane and Vrat Katha

In ancient times, there ws a King Mahijit used to rule in a city. The king was often very sad because of being childless. The king’s sorrow was not seen by the ministers and they went to the Rishi Lomash. Ministers asked the rishi the reason and remedy for King being childless. Rishi Lomash told, that in the previous birth, the king was hungry and thirsty on the day of Pavitra Ekadashi. When he reached a lake in search of water, a cow came there to drink water. The king drove the cow away and quenched his thirst by drinking water himself.

This inadvertently led to the fasting of Ekadashi and the king has to remain childless due to the exorcism of the cow. Rishi Lomash told the ministers that if you want the king to have a son, then keep the fast of Shravan Shukla Ekadashi and donate your fast to the king on the day of Dwadashi. The ministers fasted according to the method prescribed by the sage and donated the fast. With this, the king got a son. For this reason, Pavitra Ekadashi is also called Putrada Ekadashi.
