Singapore to implement laws to enhance digital infrastructure protection

Singapore, March 2 (IANS) The Singaporean government is set to introduce an amendment to the Cybersecurity Act in the Parliament next week. The amendment aims to widen the coverage of crucial digital infrastructure, as per Josephine Teo, Minister for Communications and Information.

During a debate on the Ministry’s budget in Parliament, Teo stated that the amendment is a response to the disruptions in digital services faced by Singapore last year. The amendment will include data centres, cloud services, and key entities holding sensitive data or performing important public functions.

Teo emphasized that digital failures can be caused by non-cyber reasons, such as misconfiguration in cloud architecture. She mentioned that a task force is exploring a new digital infrastructure act to address broader concerns related to key digital infrastructure beyond cybersecurity reasons.

Under the new act, operators of large cloud services and data centres may have to adhere to higher security and resilience standards to minimize the risk of system disruptions. The move aims to enhance the overall cybersecurity preparedness and resilience of Singapore’s digital infrastructure.

The proposed amendment to the Cybersecurity Act reflects Singapore’s proactive approach towards safeguarding its digital infrastructure and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of essential services to its citizens. Stay tuned for updates on the developments in this crucial cybersecurity legislation.
