Singer Sandhya Mukhopadhyay who refused Padma Shri Passes away at 91

Singer Sandhya Mukhopadhyay who had refused the Padma Shri award from the central government last month, passed away at a Kolkata hospital on Tuesday evening after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was 91. Sandhya’s music career spanned over six decades and she was known for her soulful renditions of Bengali classical and Rabindra Sangeet.

Legendary singer Sandhya Mukhopadhyay who was diagnosed with COVID-19 last week is in critical condition, according to the hospital where she is being treated. She had ischemic heart disease and needed oxygen support. Because of her irregular heart rhythm, she used to took medication and also need medication to keep her blood pressure stable. However, for the last few days she has been suffering from multi-organ dysfunction.

Sandhya Mukhopadhyay had a heart attack earlier in the day, and the medical team tried their best to save her, but she passed away.

Mukhopadhyay, who had rejected the Padma Shri award ahead of Republic Day, was admitted to SSKM Hospital as her health condition deteriorated after she fell in the bathroom of her residence. She had a left femur bone fracture and other health-related issues. She was being treated at a private hospital before she was transferred to SSKM.
