SP chief whip in UP quits party post, slated to join rebels

Lucknow, Feb 27 (IANS) Yet another Samajwadi Party MLA, Manoj Pandey from Rae Bareli, has resigned from the post of chief whip of the SP legislature party without citing a reason. He is rumored to be ready to support the BJP and was absent from a recent party meeting.

Pandey’s decision comes after expressing his discontent over Swami Prasad Maurya’s remarks against Sanatana Dharma. This adds to the growing list of SP MLAs showing allegiance to other parties, with Rakesh Pratap Singh recently cross-voting for the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections.

Singh clarified his actions by stating, “It is not against any party. It is a voice of conscience,” followed by chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. The trend of SP MLAs switching loyalties raises concerns within the party and highlights potential divisions within its ranks.

As more details about Pandey’s resignation and his possible alignment with the BJP emerge, the Samajwadi Party faces challenges in maintaining unity among its legislators. The recent instances of members supporting rival parties indicate a turbulent period for the party in the intricate political landscape of Uttar Pradesh.

The repercussions of these defections may impact the SP’s standing in upcoming elections and internal dynamics. With Abhay Singh also seen aligning with Singh in his actions, the party leadership must address the underlying issues driving these defections to prevent further fragmentation within its ranks.
