Sreeja Akula clinches singles title at WTT Feeder Beirut II; Poymantee-Akash secure mixed doubles championship
India’s Sreeja Akula clinched the women’s singles title at the WTT Feeder Beirut II table tennis tournament by defeating Luxembourg’s Sarah De Nutte 3-1 (6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-9). Akula secured her second WTT singles career title. Poymantee Baisya and Akash Pal also won the mixed doubles title.
In an exciting final, Baisya and Pal stunned their senior compatriots Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Manika Batra 3-1 (11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 11-0) to claim their first-ever WTT title. India also had a strong showing in the men’s doubles event with Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar emerging victorious.
Diya Chitale and Manush Shah, who were the winners of the Beirut I Feeder mixed doubles crown, were unable to progress to the final after losing to Sathiyan and Batra in the semifinal. Sathiyan, who had won the men’s singles title at the first Beirut Feeder, was defeated in the semifinals by Kazakhstan’s Kirill Gerassimenko.
Gerassimenko, currently ranked world No. 43 in men’s singles, overcame Sathiyan, who is ranked 103, in straight sets 3-0 (11-9, 13-11, 11-9). With these impressive performances, Indian players continue to make their mark on the international table tennis circuit.
