Sri Lanka Independence Day or say National Day in Sri Lanka is observed on 4th February. On this day, the country became an independent nation after being under the rule of the Britishers. Don Stephen Senanayake was assigned as the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and is regarded as the father of the nation. In the same year, William Gopallawa was appointed as the Governor and was the first President of the country.
A grand celebration is organized in the capital city of Sri Lanka Colombo. Military Parade is organised along with the singing of the Jayamangala Gatha (songs of victory), airshows and ceremonial double-ended drums (magul bera). Cultural events are held throughout the country to highlight the rich heritage of the country i.e food, dance and music. Kids are taught the roots of their country and encourage the feeling of patriotism among them.
