Srikanth and Rajawat progress to QF in Swiss Open as Sindhu and Lakshya are eliminated

Basel, March 22 (IANS) Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth and youngster Priyanshu Rajawat have advanced to the quarterfinals of the BWF Swiss Open, Super 300 badminton tournament. Srikanth defeated Lee Zii Jia while Rajawat beat Lei Lanxi in straight games.

Srikanth, ranked 27th in the world, outplayed the world no 10 Malaysian Lee Zii Jia 21-16, 21-15 in just 36 minutes. Rajawat, on the other hand, emerged victorious against world No. 33 Lei Lanxi of China 21-14, 21-13.

Rajawat had earlier pulled off an upset against World No. 14 Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong. Srikanth will face Chia Hao Lee of Chinese Taipei, while Rajawat will play against Chou Tien Chen in the next rounds.

Men’s single shuttler Kiran George also secured a spot in the quarterfinals after a hard-fought win over Frenchman Alex Lanier. He will now take on Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the next round.

On the other hand, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu’s campaign ended in the pre-quarterfinals after a defeat against Japan’s Tokoma Miyazaki. This was her second consecutive round of 16 loss.

In the women’s doubles event, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the last eight by defeating Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra. Tanisha Castro and Ashwini Ponnappa, unfortunately, crashed out after losing to Japanese shuttlers Rui Hirokami and Yuna Kato.

India’s mixed doubles campaign also came to an end with B Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy, as well as Sathish Kumar Karunakaran-Aadya Variyath, suffering defeats in their respective matches.
