State Department staffer resigns due to disagreement with US Gaza policy

A US State Department official, Annelle Sheline, resigned in protest of the US continuing weapons delivery to Israel, citing atrocities committed in Gaza and the West Bank. Sheline blamed the US for supporting actions that meet the crime of genocide.

Sheline, who served in the Office of Near Eastern Affairs, Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, decided to resign from her position due to the administration’s support of Israeli military actions.

In an opinion piece on CNN, Sheline expressed her reasons for resigning, stating that she could not continue to serve an administration that enables such atrocities. She mentioned the delivery of lethal aid to Israel and the administration’s disregard for American laws regarding human rights violations.

Sheline’s resignation comes after other similar incidents, including the resignation of another State Department official and a US airman’s self-immolation in front of the Israeli embassy. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has acknowledged dissenting views within the department when making policy decisions.
