Sumit Nagal eliminated from Marrakech Open in round of 16

In a thrilling match at the ATP Marrakech Open, India’s Sumit Nagal faced a tough defeat against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. Despite a strong start and winning the first set convincingly, Nagal couldn’t maintain his momentum and ultimately fell to Sonego in three sets.

Ranked 95th in the world, Nagal showcased his clay court prowess by winning the first set 6-1. However, Sonego, seeded fourth and ranked 61st, made a strong comeback by winning the next two sets 6-3, 6-4, securing victory and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Nagal’s hopes of reaching the quarterfinals of a Tour-level event for the second time in his career were dashed by Sonego’s resilience on the court. This defeat marked Nagal’s second consecutive loss to the Italian player, following their previous encounter at the Dubai Championships earlier this year.

Despite the disappointment in singles, there was a positive outcome for India in the men’s doubles category. Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti showcased great chemistry and skill, advancing to the quarterfinals with a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory over Bart Stevens and Petros Tsitsipas, a Dutch-Greek duo.

Overall, it was a challenging day for Sumit Nagal at the ATP Marrakech Open, but there were bright moments for Indian tennis in the doubles category. Stay tuned for more updates as the tournament progresses.
