Surdas Jayanti 2022 – Date, Celebration, Story And Significance

Surdas Jayanti is celebrated in the memory of the birth of poet Surdas. He was famous for his poems and songs praising Lord Krishna. He was born blind. He was popularly addressed as “Bhakta Kavi Surdas” because of his untiring faith in Lord Krishna.

His date of birth is unknown, but it is believed to be 1479 AD or 1478 AD. According to the Hindu calendar, Surdas Jayanti falls during the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh; Panchami Tithi. This year it will be the 544th birth anniversary of Surdas Jayanti. It is mainly celebrated in the northern part of the nation. Lord Krishna is worshiped on this day and devotees observe a fast in honor of the poet. Many music communities come together to celebrate the day by organizing music and poetry sessions. Special events are held in Vrindavan on this day

Surdas Jayanti In Popular Culture

There is no clear account of his place of birth. It is believed by some that he was born as Ramdas Saraswat in a Saraswat Brahmin family in the district called Runkata of Agra, while some others believe that he was born in Sihi village of Haryana. Due to his blindness, he was never accepted by his family. One day he left his house one day and started living on the banks of river Yamuna.

After getting the opportunity, Surdas became the disciple of Shri Vallabhacharya. Surdas was taught about the life of Lord Krishna and told stories from his life which included stories about Radha by Sri Vallabhacharya. Surdas, inspired by the life of Krishna, composes melodious hymns and devotional songs in honor of the Lord. Surdas’s Sursagar is the most recognized work. Sursagar means ocean of melodies.
