Surdas ji, regarded as one of the greatest devotees of Lord Shri Krishna, was born on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Vaishakh month according to the Hindu lunar calendar, which is now marked as Surdas Jayanti. In 2023, his birth anniversary is being celebrated on Tuesday, April 25. Kavi Surdas was a noted poet and musician who composed many songs, couplets, and poems in devotion to Kanha. His divine melodies are still captivating individuals today. Some of his compositions include Sursagar, Surasavali, Sahitya Lahari, Nal Damayanti, and Byhalo.

Born in 1478 AD in Runkata village to a Brahmin family, Surdas ji was been blind since birth. From a young age, Surdas Ji displayed a saintly character and a skill for singing, which eventually made him recognized. He lived near Agra at Gaughat and met Vallabhacharya ji, who prompted him into Pushtimarg and delivered him the pastimes of Shri Krishna. Vallabhacharya also entrusted Surdas ji with singing Leela in the temple of Shri Nathji, a commitment he continued for the rest of his life.

According to legend, Kavi Surdas was once so engaged in his devotion to Krishna that he slipped into a well. Lord Krishna, pleased with his devotion, saved his life and restored his eyesight. When Krishna asked Surdas ji what he wanted as a boon, the poet asked to be blinded again so that he could only see Krishna and nobody else.
