Swifties for Kamala: Fans Mobilize in Grassroots Campaign to Support Harris

A grassroots movement called “Swifties for Kamala” has emerged, rallying Taylor Swift fans to support Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race, despite the pop star’s lack of public endorsement.

This group, which is unaffiliated with Swift or Harris’s official campaign, has already raised significant funds and garnered attention online.

On Tuesday, August 27, the coalition launched its first major fundraising event, a Zoom call that attracted over 34,000 participants and raised more than $142,000 for Harris’s campaign.

The event featured notable figures such as singer-songwriter Carole King and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kirsten Gillibrand, who encouraged attendees to get involved in political activism.

Although Swift has not endorsed any candidate for the upcoming election, her influence on her fanbase is undeniable. Many Swifties have felt motivated to take political action, drawing inspiration from the values Swift has previously expressed.

In 2020, Swift endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket and encouraged voter registration, resulting in a surge of young voters.

The “Swifties for Kamala” movement taps into this legacy, with co-founder Irene Kim stating, “We don’t need to wait for an endorsement.

We know what our values are, and we know what Taylor’s values are.” The group has already amassed tens of thousands of followers on social media, highlighting the potential power of fan-driven political activism.

During the Zoom event, Carole King, who Swift inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, delivered an inspiring performance of Swift’s hit “Shake It Off.”

King also provided practical advice for those new to political volunteering, emphasizing the importance of grassroots efforts like phone banking and door-knocking.

Senator Elizabeth Warren also addressed the Swifties, praising their resilience and ability to stand up against adversity—a quality she likened to the spirit of Harris’s campaign.

Warren’s remarks, laced with references to Swift’s lyrics, resonated with the audience, further solidifying the connection between the fanbase and the campaign.

While Taylor Swift has yet to weigh in on the 2024 election, the “Swifties for Kamala” movement exemplifies how fans can mobilize independently, using their shared values and collective power to influence the political landscape.

Whether or not Swift herself gets involved, her fanbase has made it clear that they are ready to support Harris in any way they can.
