Afghan Caretaker Govt Confirms Detention of 2 US Nationals

Kabul, April 1 (IANS) – Afghan caretaker government’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has confirmed the detention of two US nationals in Afghanistan, local media reported. “A number of foreign nationals, including two US nationals, have been held in Afghanistan and the reason for their imprisonment is a violation of Afghanistan’s laws,” Mujahid said.

Mujahid emphasized that anyone who obtains an Afghan visa and enters the country is obliged to respect the law of the land. He also pointed out that in other countries, if Afghan nationals violate the law, they will definitely be arrested. The official did not provide specific details about the situation.

The Afghan administration’s spokesman made these statements amidst growing concerns in the US about the imprisonment of American citizens in Afghanistan. There have been reports of calls for President Joe Biden to secure the release of the detained individuals and bring them back to the United States. The situation continues to unfold as both countries navigate the legal implications of the detainment.

The detention of the two US nationals in Afghanistan has raised questions about the enforcement of laws and regulations in the country, particularly regarding foreign nationals. Mujahid’s comments shed light on the importance of respecting the legal framework of Afghanistan while visiting or residing in the country. The case remains under scrutiny as authorities work to address the matter in accordance with legal procedures.

The repercussions of the detention of the US nationals in Afghanistan are yet to be fully realized, as discussions around diplomatic interventions and legal actions continue. The issue underscores the complexities of international relations and the responsibilities that come with adhering to the laws of any country. The Afghan government’s response to the situation will be closely monitored as developments unfold.
