Temperatures in Japan rise to unseasonably high

Temperatures Soar in Japan, Northern Region Hits Record Highs

Tokyo, Feb 20 (IANS) – The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that temperatures soared across Japan as warm air flowed in from the south, leading to a record-setting February high in the northern part of the country. The temperature rose to 17.1 degrees Celsius in Hokkaido’s Mombetsu City, matching temperatures usually seen in late June, and was 18.8 degrees higher than the average for this time of year. This record high temperature even topped the previous record of 12.6 degrees logged in 1960. Additionally, temperatures reached 20.1 degrees in Akita City, 21.8 degrees in Kanazawa City, and 16.5 degrees in central Tokyo. The unseasonably warm weather is expected to continue, with the JMA forecasting a high of 24 degrees in Shizuoka City and 22 degrees in central Tokyo on Tuesday. However, weather officials have also warned of potential rain and rapid snowmelt in northern and eastern Japan, urging people to be on alert for possible flooding, swollen rivers, and avalanches.

The unseasonably high temperatures in northern Japan have set a record for the month of February, with Mombetsu City experiencing temperatures usually seen in late June. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported a temperature of 17.1 degrees Celsius, which surpassed the previous record set in 1960 by 18.8 degrees. Other locations in Japan also experienced unusually warm temperatures, with Akita City reaching 20.1 degrees, Kanazawa City hitting 21.8 degrees, and central Tokyo recording a temperature of 16.5 degrees. The warm weather is expected to continue with a forecasted high of 24 degrees in Shizuoka City and 22 degrees in central Tokyo on Tuesday.

While the warm weather may be welcomed by some, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a warning about potential rain and rapid snowmelt in northern and eastern Japan. The agency urged people to be alert for possible flooding in low-lying areas, swollen rivers, and avalanches as a result of the unseasonably warm temperatures. The record-setting February highs in northern Japan are a cause for concern as they may lead to weather-related hazards, despite the pleasant warmth experienced in the region.

In summary, the unseasonably warm weather in Japan has led to record-setting February highs in the northern region, with temperatures reaching levels typically seen in late June. While some may enjoy the warmth, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a warning about potential rain, rapid snowmelt, and the resulting hazards such as flooding and avalanches. As the warm weather continues, residents in affected areas are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions.
