Thanksgiving 2024 will fall on November 28. This is simply the fourth Thursday in November. Since the last Thursday in November may be a week after the third Thursday in the very same November, the date of Thanksgiving changes every year but falls only in late November. It began during the 1620s when the Pilgrims and Puritans from England landed on American soil with their celebratory traditions. Thanksgiving was first conceptualized in the year 1621 when the Pilgrims and Wampanoag tribes conducted massive celebrations to welcome good and bountiful harvests.
Looking back, Thanksgiving did not hold on a fixed date earlier, but it was held on different dates. However, with the 19th century, this trend of holding Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of the month had caught most of America. It marked that era where people managed to enjoy military success in war and appreciate prosperity in life.
In 1863, US President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, and recognized that it was to be held every year on the last Thursday of November. Then in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made the date change again, from the last Thursday of November to the fourth Thursday of the same month, for the special reason of allowing the Christmas shopping season to start earlier. This lasted only a few years as an experiment, but in 1942 it became officially established as the fourth Thursday.
Perhaps some of you wonder why Thanksgiving cannot be on a Friday so everyone can have a long weekend. But the reason for this is also very interesting. Actually, this tradition traces its roots way back to the Puritan period. In this era, the Puritans considered Friday as a day of fasting since this was a fast for the Catholic Church. There were preparations made for Shabbat on Saturdays, and Sundays would be the days of worship. So over time, it became tradition to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday.
Now, Thanksgiving has been a magnificent and time-honored celebration in the United States. With this day, people show thankfulness by meeting with their family members and friends. Traditional food that is served on this particular day includes turkey, stuffings, potatoes, cranberry sauce, etc. Besides this, it also depicts unity and charity in society. In most places, this day is organized in the form of food distribution, food collections, and volunteer activities for the poor and underprivileged.
