President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving Day to the fourth Thursday instead of the last Thursday, which was the practice then, in 1939. The purpose of this move was to prompt people to go out Christmas shopping a week earlier and hence stir up more business activity. It was later permanently set as the fourth Thursday in November in 1942.
Many people sometimes ask why Thanksgiving would not be held on Friday so that all could enjoy three days off. This tradition, which indeed comes from the Puritans, who usually took their days of thanks and gratitude on a Thursday. To them, Friday was also a fasting day because in Catholicism, it was also a day for fasting. They were planning for Sunday on Saturday of course, and no work on Sunday. Thus, the tradition of Thanksgiving on Thursday was found.
The Thanksgiving dinner is characterized by the traditional dishes that include turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce and pies, especially pumpkin and sweet potato pies. It is more of a day when people share their hardships and joys together and express gratitude for all that is good in life. People sit with their families and friends and have a meal on Thanksgiving.
